Missiessy comes from "Monsieur Sixte", the sixth and last surviving siblings of the Sixte family. Coming from a family of sailors, Missiessy travels in the pursuit of his own holy grail: women and the foolish idea to understand them... and, as for happiness, what is important is the way! First travel: Missiessy landed in America in 1783, aboard the Saint-Bernard. The French community settled in Louisiana is a curious mixture of adventurers and penniless gentlemen, exploiting unhealthy swamps infested with alligators and mosquitoes. Missiessy there discovers a myriad of exotic animals, whose skins, he soon realizes, have new special powers: the great Manta Ray, whose skin becomes valuable shagreen, or the Crocodril, this alligator with impenetrable skin ... Missiessy begins to dream. Would each of these talismans be able to attract a new woman? Surrounded by Indians and uprooted slaves, descendants of "good family" let themselves be initiated to the litanies of a mixed-race religion : Cajun voodoo. Once back in France, Missiessy passes on his new knowledge to his sons... The mermaid, magical bridge between real and wonderful, is the symbol of this relationship.
